Great looking board. I am in about to fiberglass my cedar SUP. Since this is my first time glassing, Quick question, to get your wood to shine and wet out did you apply a stain to the wood before glassing or was that just from the sealing layer of resin. Thanks for your help. Chad

Thanks, Chad! The wood takes on the deeper color from the epoxy alone. Varnishing on top of the epoxy will deepen the color even more.

I would advise against staining the wood because of potential problems with incompatibility with the epoxy. Oil-based stains won't work. If you want to add color I would use a water-based stain and test it beforehand. If you have stained wood next to unstained wood there is a possibility that the stain will bleed a little into the unstained areas.

Thanks so much, I will avoid the stain altogether. Couple more questions if you don't mind. After you fine sand with the 120 grit are you putting on a polish/finish layer to give your board the high gloss shine? Your board is 12 feet, mine is 11, how much resin do you use per layer(1/2 gallon) I am just about to order and want to have enough. I have read that you should put 2 layers of cloth on top and 1 on bottom a 4oz and 6 oz. What is your opinion. Thanks again.

Continuing. I was told that the Glossing layer is just the resin with Surfacing Wax added to it and that will give me the shine I am looking for. Is that correct? As for the layers it is 6 oz bottom, 4oz and 6oz on top, just to clarify.

Thanks, I will avoid the stain and just use the resin. Couple other questions, after the 120 grit sanding are you putting on a finish/ gloss layer? A shop told me that the Resin with the surfacing wax added in will give me that gloss. What is your experience. Also My board is about the same size, how much resin are you using per coat. Would a gallon of resin be sufficient for an 11 foot board? Also people have told me to use 2 layers of cloth on top a 4oz and 6 oz. What is your recommendation. Thanks again. Chad

I am not familiar at all with resin with surfacing wax. I think the difference is that you are using polyester resin and I am using epoxy. To get a high gloss shine, you have to put 4 layers of varnish over the epoxy, wet sanding with 300 grit between coats. I'll post about that later.

Your layup sounds pretty strong! I'm only using one layer of 4 oz glass which overlaps on the rails. We needed at least 1/2 gallon of resin + 1 quart of hardener, but wasted a lot.
