Cedar Strip Kayak Building: The Moon Graphic

I've been working on the graphics for the deck of my kayak and finished this moon design for the foredeck hatch cover. I wanted to make it as a wood veneer overlay. I scanned some veneers (maple, purpleheart and beech) to see what it would look like. It looks more like something you would see at Disneyland's Tiki Room or Trader Vic's than as a Northwest Coast Native American art!

Cedar Strip Kayak Building: Preview -- The Look of Cedar

After sanding and filling any holes with Elmers Wood Filler I wiped down the deck with a rag soaked in warm water to raise the grain before sanding again.  Raising the grain helps fill any holes and minor scratches.  It also gives you an idea of what the wood will look like after the application of epoxy.
